There are two elements. An organization – and the associated organization VDC
Former – users and stuff, latter – the actual resources.
To begin with I always create an “empty” organization VDC. Basically my own organization which I am using to publish templates, isos and the sort. So here I am going to
- Create a Template Organization
- Create a catalog
- Upload an ISO to the catalog and make it public
- Create a Customer Organization
- Give that customer a virtual router and internal network
- Create a VM from that public shared ISO (Linux)
- And test
Click Create a new Organization
Fill out the company name and click Next
Here I am using LDAP in case I want to test something without the need of creating a new user
Here I am not creating local users for my Template Organization. I can always login back to the admin interface if something isn’t working using LDAP. A customer organization obviously need at least one user who then is Org. Admin.
Click Next
I do want to share my catalog, click Next ( It will become a public catalog after all )
Add your mail server details here (I don’t actually have one in my lab), click Next
The only thing I am changing here really is the lease time to Never Expire. It is for templates after all.
Click Finish
Done
Click Allocate resources to an organization
Select your Organization and click Next
Select your Provider VDC and click Next
Decide on the Allocation Model click Next (more about them HERE)
Configure required resource allocations and click Next
Add the appropriate Storage Policy and enter the amount of storage you want to assign to the organization and click Next
Select Thin- or / and Fast-Provisioning if you wish.
Select a network pool and click Next (the VXLAN Pool has been created automatically)
I will not create an Edge at this stage but will do so when I create a real organization, click Next
Give the Organization VDC a name
Click Finish
Now select Organization VDCs
and click Templates, then change to the Catalog tab.
Here click the green “+” and give the catalog a name, click Next
It is my own catalog, so here I allow to use any storage
Here I give every user in my Template organization Full Control and all others Read Only. As mentioned, this is the template / iso repository everyone should have access to
Click Finish
Now select the Templates catalog
Move to the Media & Other tab and click Upload
Allow the integration plugin
Now select an ISO and upload it
This will be your now hidden progress window
This will succeed eventually but it will still copy the iso in the background to the right place
But eventually, it’ll be done
Now we got a public catalog with an ISO. Now it is time to create a real organization
Same process as above, create an organization and create a user (Here I created a local user)
Here I created an organization called Open902 Ltd. with a single user.
Just make sure you make note of the org URL
Now create an Organization VDC using the newly created Organization
All steps are identical. Here I also skip creating an Edge Gateway, as this is part of another article
